Intendis: Successful first year as an independent dermatology company

- Press Release -

Berlin, May 05, 2006

  • Double-digit sales growth
  • Excellent starting position for the strategic development of Intendis

Intendis GmbH achieved a turnover of 223 million Euro in the financial year 2005. With these results the company achieved a sales growth of 11 percent in its first year as a legally independent entity, compared to the previous year (when it was still operating as Scherings´ Dermatology division). "In 2005 we laid the foundation for lasting success in the important field of dermatology. The outstanding dynamics of Intendis with double-digit growth provide us with an excellent starting position for the further strategic development of our company", explained Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kehr, President and CEO of Intendis GmbH.

Sales growth in all regions:

In 2005 Intendis was able to further expand its business around the globe. In the European markets Intendis achieved above-average sales growth both in Germany (+ 12 percent to 19.6 million Euro) and in Turkey (+ 19 percent to 16.3 million Euro). In the United States Intendis recorded sales of 25.3 million Euro due to the good market position of Finacea – a very satisfactory increase of 47 percent overall. In Latin America the Mexican business increased by 16 percent to 6.8 million Euro and in Brazil sales increased by 17 percent to 7.3 million Euro – in both cases the increase was partially attributable to the exchange rate. Sales in Japan slightly increased at + 2 percent, rising to 28.8 million Euro.

Todays Intendis subsidiaries contributed a total of 172 million Euro to our sales, equating to a share of 77 percent. The remaining 23 percent were still recorded by the Schering subsidiaries. "These figures provide us with two important pieces of information: first, that – through our subsidiaries – we do indeed have a presence in all major markets across the world and second, that we are particularly good at realising our potential in those markets where we operate our own subsidiaries”, Kehr emphasized.

Core products with above-average growth:

During the last year Intendis achieved continued growth with its top products in particular. As expected, the main contribution to this growth came from Advantan and Finacea. Finacea developed dynamically and increased by 53 percent to 29.9 million Euro. This drug for the treatment of rosacea achieved a market share of over 20 percent in the United States. That makes Finacea the drug that is most frequently prescribed by American dermatologists for this indication. Advantan, too, achieved significant sales growth (+ 16 percent to 40.7 million Euro). As a medicine which is particularly well tolerated, this corticosteroid is the preferred choice of many dermatologists and paediatricians for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. In 2005 Advantan continued the trend of previous years and was by far the most widely sold Intendis product. Travocort was another product with above-average growth (+ 20 percent to 21.4 million Euro). Intendis was able to achieve growth in all strategic fields of activity.

Exceedingly good results:

With a margin of 12 percent the company has achieved a satisfactory operative result that exceeded the expectations.

New staff at Intendis:

Sales were not the only area of growth, though – the number of staff grew, too. The foundation of our subsidiaries in Japan, Poland and Portugal complemented by setting up and completing central functions at our Head Office and our subsidiaries significantly increased our number of staff. On December 31, 2005 our company employed around 800 people around the world, which is an increase of approximately 30 percent compared to last year.

Prospects for 2006:

For the year 2006 the company expects a continuation of its dynamic business development with double-digit growth. To ensure a successful future Intendis plans to in-license new development products or products which are already on the market. Furthermore, we intend to partner with other companies. "We have set ourselves ambitious targets. We want to use the fantastic opportunity we have and develop Intendis into a leader in dermatology", said Kehr.
