Science for a Better Life

Our skin fulfills numerous functions: it protects us against external influences and serves as the contact to the outside world. Skin disorders can therefore strongly reduce the quality of life for those affected and require effective treatment. Intendis is concentrating on the development and marketing of new dermatological therapeutics with the aim of continuously improving the treatment of skin disorders.

Acne

In acne, hormonal influences cause an overproduction of sebum which leads to clogged skin pores. This change in the conditions around the hair/-sebaceous gland area can lead to a significant increase of certain bacteria, which in turn can lead to inflammatory skin changes. In addition to the treatment of mild to moderate acne using the external application of azelaic acid, the therapy of more severe forms of acne can require systemic (oral) treatment.

Eczema

Eczema is described as an inflammatory skin disease, which can arise as a reaction to numerous stimuli. Up to 18% of the population are affected by this skin disorder, which is triggered by often unknown causes. Diagnosis and therapy therefore represent a big challenge.

Psoriasis

As with any other organ, the human skin depends on a precisely arranged interaction of signal substances. In the case of psoriasis, this interaction has been greatly disturbed. Triggered by a series of internal signals, external factors and further driven by immune cells, the top skin cells reproduce at up to seven times the normal rate. The introduction of calcipotriol, a substance similar to natural vitamin D3, has revolutionized the treatment of psoriasis. It works by restoring order to the overly stimulated reproduction of the skin cells.

Mycoses

Superficial fungal infections of the skin are common and ubiquitous, affecting millions of people across the globe, irrespective of a skin type and age group. The chief symptoms are experienced itch, burning and redness. Crucial for success during the treatment is patient compliance declining with increasing duration of therapy. Therefore a rapid onset of action plays an important role in the mycoses treatment. Imidazoles are frequently prescribed for superficial fungal infections, as they have long-established antifungal efficacy and a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, the use of an antimycotic agent, such as an imidazole, in combination with a topical corticosteroid has the advantage of promoting more rapid resolution of inflammation and relief from itch, as a result of the anti-inflammatory properties of the corticosteroid.
